Carlisle

Carlisle has 2,000 years of Border history with wars, castles, forts, and the famous Hadrian's Wall and many other places of interest to visit.

Carlisle is renowned for its choice of shop, covered markets and services.  The Lanes Shopping Centre with narrow back lanes and old world charm is a must for exploration.

The Sands entertainment Centre offers a variety of programmes and Carlisle has an active night life.

 

Longtown

Longtown is home to England's largest sheep market, and sits on the River Esk, being the natural border with Scotland. Inthe past Longtown has seen many centuries of border warfare.

One of the local legends is that King Arthur raised an army of Northern Britons to meet the pagan hoards from the North Sea.  It is said that King Arthur's last battle could have been at the Hadrian's Wall fort of Camtoglama and that his body rested at the Parish of Arthuret.

Briar Lea House is situated on the Solway Moss Battlefield (1542) Which was fought between the British and the invading Scottish armies.

Longtown has free on street parking and a variety of shops, restaurants and take away's.

 

 

Scotland

Perhaps you would like to visit Scotland, the border of which is only 4 miles away.  Why not elope for the day to the Famous Blacksmiths shop at Gretna Green.   

Or perhaps visit the Gretna Sunday market or shop in the new retail outlet village,  an experience not to be missed. You could even drive to Glasgow or Edinburgh.

 

Lake District

The North Lakes and Windermere are all a short distance away and make a pleasant day out.  Ullswater, shown left, is the nearest lake to us just 45 minutes away.
